The association of women Rom was founded in 2002 from a number of women Rom that wanted to improve their quality of life by interfering into the local authorities and asserting their rights.
Adonia, Maria, Despoina say:
"We are facing problems with the education of our children. Our neighborhood is rarely cleaned.
We don't have doctors, we don't have vaccines, everything is out of order."
Women Rom gathered in order to reach solutions to the problems that every Rom face in the area of Dendropotamos such as:
Poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, limited access to education and to health services. The last few years the problem of drug traffic has become very intensive.
Anoula says:
"We fed up with the thorough and complete inadequacy that occurs in our neighborhood.
There were 17 associations here that were inactive. We had to react somehow."
Since 2002 the association of women Rom of Dendropotamos has been active in issues that concern the local community of Rom and a number of cultural activities in order to improve their cultural distinctiveness and needs.
The association is consisted of 370 members who are women Rom of the area of Dendropotamos.
There is also a 7 member permanent staff that is responsible for the dispatch of the activities and interventions.
Furthermore, the women Rom association is working in partnership with governmental and non-governmental organizations that are able to benefit Rom communities.
